When Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Spencer Brill spent a harrowing week in the hospital after contracting COVID-19, I doubt he was thinking much about his debut single. Fast forward three years, however, and the artist has just unveiled ‘Hospital Song’, a poignant tune that delves into his personal encounter with the virus. After meeting his bandmates on the increasingly popular app Vampr, Spencer set out to produce a sound that he’s described as “indie emo rock for elder millennials”. I couldn’t have labelled it better myself!
Turning to the likes of Weezer, Ben Folds, and Death Cab for Cutie for inspiration, Brill has concocted an upbeat, infectious, and edgy little track. It begins with a less-is-more approach, just the musician and an acoustic guitar, before descending into a crunchy and energetic anthem.
Spencer’s storytelling flair is also distinctly evident in ‘Hospital Song’. You go through the same distressing and traumatic emotions as the artist and join him on a journey of self-discovery and healing. It’s further proof of music’s power to process and transcend life’s most challenging moments. Brill is undoubtedly a musician deserving of close attention, and we can’t wait to hear what he offers up next!
