Describing himself as “most of the cool kids dropped out of art school. I am the fool who finished’, US upcomer Art Grad was a very keen discovery in our books. You see, we are always drawn to everything that can be defined as ‘ethereal’. If it’s floating in the space/time continuum then it’s for us. And when it comes to Art Grad’s music, that’s exactly how we felt. The American talent manages to write timeless pieces, slices of organic sonic matter that kindly but surely kidnap the listener into its own artistic universe, a place where things don’t have a solid shape, everything is liquid, and a grainy texture seems to be the common denominator.
Off the back of a busy year, boasting already one EP and a few singles, Art Grad now returns with a short yet very powerful new EP, ‘Speeding’. Comprised of three tracks, the record explores a peculiar blend of shoegaze-style guitars and primordial drum machines, creating malleable arrangements that work perfectly with their author’s soulful, evocative vocals.
Citing King Krule, Puma Blue and Still Woozy as his primary influence, Sam DeVine (the human behind Art Grad) is particularly keen on reminding us about the cathartic quality his music seeks to embody. As we were declaring just above, this is dreamy material, made to transport you somewhere quiet and comfortable.
