We can look at Leonardo Barilaro’s latest creation from multiple angles. First of all, there’s his crazy, innovative release strategy that sees him release a song on streaming services every day. Yep, every day. That’s impressive, and something we hadn’t seen before. ‘Becoming who I was’ saw the light on the 14th of November, and there’s a lot to unpack. There’s the abstract sonic matter: interlacing piano melodies run towards each other in an endless loop of constant energy, mesmerising the listeners with a seemingly abstract arrangement. It sort of recalls the vastity of the universe, the permanent flow of stars and planets, so complex yet in full synchrony.
Stars and planets are especially relevant to Barilaro, him being an aerospace engineer who recently had the chance to have his music played in space, on the International Space Station.
‘Becoming who I was’ gets to us three months after that ground-breaking experience. The track carries a personal nuance, very dear to Leonardo himself. In it, he recalls childhood and the feeling of being destined for something bigger, something transcending our planetary borders. Defining himself the ‘space pianist’, Barilaro seems committed to pursuing a journey started almost 30 years ago, an interstellar journey which seems to have paid off, so far.
Recommended! A peculiar and mesmerising experience. Discover ‘Becoming who I was’ on Spotify:
