Debuting earlier this year, British-born songstress Sounds Like Lily has been championing a delicate and soulful RnB outlook, balancing over jazzy and pop influences towards a holistic, comprehensive personal style. Needless to say, the results are extraordinary. After three separate singles, the project releases its first long-length effort in the form of an EP, ‘Glad I Met Ya’. Working closely with multi-instrumentalist Rowland O’Connor and producers Jimi Stewart and Tommy Williams, the record showcases the magnitude of Sounds Like Lily’s talent, boasting a charming sound drenched in tradition while looking at the future.
It’s interesting because although ‘Glad I Met Ya’ indicates clear neo-soul influences, they tend to mellow down into a more digestible, friendlier format, providing material that’s placed in its own universe, a place where soulful meets pop and freedom is the keyword. Offering a charming glimpse into Sounds Like Lily’s personal experiences and thoughts, the EP is perhaps the first sign of a bright career in the making.
Introduced by a short soundscape, creating the mood for what’s to come, the record sets off with past single ‘Daydreaming’, a pure, soulful, groovy anthem, effectively catching the neo-soul vibe. ‘Cupid’ takes it down a notch, delivering an intense yet intimate ballad. Title-track ‘Glad I Met Ya’ and ‘The Feeling’ develop on a more diverse background, with guitars resembling indie sensibilities and more conventional grooves. ‘Penny’ closes the EP with what’s perhaps the most poppy song, an upbeat, bubbly and fierce bop with an eclectic arrangement.
Overall, a worthy record for a worthy artist. Clearly possessing raw, unfiltered talent, Sounds Like Lily sets herself up for success, thanks to refined, controlled vocals and strong musical maturity.
