Showcasing their immense instrumental prowess, American outfit Soulganic crafts material that’s elegant and nuanced, constantly walking the line between soul, funk and jazz influences. In fact, they proudly delve into fusion territories, making their music pretty compelling for any musician out there. ‘Family Ties’ is their latest effort, a loopy and intense composition with an eclectic structure.
First, we get a groovy build-up with muted guitar riffs and a legendary bassline. While the section is repetitive and long, it also makes for a hypnotising effect, and also it positively contrasts with what comes afterwards, a triumph of acid jazz-like trumpet (courtesy of Stan Odell Graham) and Latin percussions. The ending is perhaps the most complex part of the record, real fusion euphoria!
The single also anticipated an upcoming album, ‘Phosphene’. Speaking about the track, Soulganic explain: “We wanted ‘Family Ties’ to capture the essence of our musical journey, and the musical journey of humanity itself, looking back to the dawn of rhythm and self-expression. Our collaboration with Stan brought an incredible energy and authenticity to the track. We feel it’s a perfect introduction to the sound and spirit of Phosphene.”
