Soul Glory in Gully’s Latest Effort ‘New Kicks’

You know the drill, we are always on the lookout for fresh and exciting music and artists. Well, this week we were lucky to come across Gully, a glorious triumph of soul, funk and jazz packaged in an exciting and groovy contemporary formula. The results? Music that makes you move, tunes that brighten your day and put a smile on your face. The project’s latest effort, ‘New Kicks’, showcases exactly that: a bubbly, dancy jewel with a certain disco flair. The record follows up from previous gems ‘The View’ and ’See The Sun’, marking the third single to be released this year. All sharing the same sonic reference, it is easy to imagine Gully gearing up for an upcoming EP or album release.

Based in Bristol, the British artist doesn’t keep his quirkiness a secret, preferring to walk his own path to stardom. His sound is pretty unique, we have to say: the way he uses horns and jazzy chords is not an everyday feature. Clearly a gifted composer and musician, Gully masters the piano, the perfect backdrop for his expressive, soulful vocals. Already catching the attention of a few industry actors (BBC, Fresh On The Net), the English talent seems to be projected onto bigger things. We’ll be here supporting!

Opening in classic disco fashion (but also with a certain French touch), ‘New Kicks’ opens with a poignant piano tone and a funky bassline, before jumping into an evocative verse. The addition of live drums helps place the track into soul territories, but frankly, coupled with electronic beats the track would have been a deep house banger. Once the chorus arrives, Gully breaks it down in light poignancy, only to then return to groovy lands with a complex horns section. A quite unique concoction of sounds from him, who successfully blends a wide range of influences into his personal artistic brand.
