At the beginning of this year, I was fortunate enough to interview Sophia Stephens, a supremely talented eighteen-year-old singer/songwriter based in Indiana. At the time, she had just released a rich and eclectic tune called ‘Fervor’ and I instantly fell in love with her style. Now, with over 80,000 Spotify plays, it’s clear I wasn’t the only one. Having waited patiently to hear from Sophia again, I am now proud to introduce you to ‘Love & Grief’, the artist’s debut album.
‘Muscle Memory’ kicks things off, a track penned by Stephens as a sophomore in high school. Featuring the perfect blend of upbeat pop elements and stripped-back sounds, it’s a catchy yet moving introduction.
‘Get Go’ is an edgy and fast-paced pop-rock banger that is guaranteed to be a crowd favourite, while ‘Up in Flames’ showcases a peaceful and gentle side to Sophia’s artistry that is just beautiful.
‘Love & Grief’, the record’s title track, was also the first song recorded for the album. A soulful piece of pop magic, Sophia says she wanted the tune to be “a reflection about how time is constantly moving, but how grateful I am to have love and to live the life I’m living”.
