In a world where most artists run behind trends and known formulas, we are always on the lookout for sonic explorers, creatives not afraid to pursue their own path, taking risks and exposing themselves to third-party scrutiny. This attitude can be certainly found in JUNK, a musical collective with the aim of engineering the perfect blend of Jazz and Funk. Comprised of Aaron Dubl A Seener and Dale Dirty D Pearson, the group has conceptualized a new sound that flouts traditional genre boundaries and has the potential to revolutionize the industry for years to come.
‘Chromatose’ is JUNK’s first EP, and their debut as a compacted sole entity. In it, the listener will find an unfamiliar yet attractive musical universe made up of jazz-derived riffing, groovy drum grooves and a good amount of vocals efxs. The band gets creative: saxophones are not only used for their original tones, but also as a source of frequencies, mangled and treated in experimental baths. Distortion steps in from now and then, allowing their convoluted basslines to really shine through. Ultimately though, the listening experience will surprise you positively, taking you on an endless journey into unexpected territories.
There’s a good component of early hip-hop beats, perhaps pushing the record into early 90’ fusion territories (think Miles Davis’ last-ever studio album ‘Doo-Bop). This confirms the fact that – although pushing sonic traditions – JUNK also incorporates a good chunk of tradition into their music. Overall, a fantastic record for the keen listener – don’t sleep on JUNK.
