There’s a great deal of eclecticism in ‘Hawaiian Cowboy’. Penned by award-winning ensemble Slack Key Ohana, the album blends traditional Hawaiian language and musical stylings with more recognisable Western and Americana flavourings. The result is a frankly unique record, one that includes English lyricism and blues episodes alongside a healthy amount of lap steel guitars.
Featuring thirteen pieces, ‘Hawaiian Cowboy’ goes from Americana anthems such as the title track ‘Hawaiian Cowboy’ to more traditional, laidback gems such as ‘Aloha ‘Oe’. It’s a melting pot of experiences and cultures that greatly benefits Slack Key Ohana, allowing them to craft authentic and inspiring records. Their name recalls the Slack Key fingerstyle guitar technique – something the group uses constantly.
Built on a family-like vibe (since the majority of the members are actually in the same family), the band includes Kamaka Mullen (guitar and vocals), Brian Witkin (guitar, lap steel and vocals), Carol Witkin (ukulele and vocals), Joe Witkin (bass, piano and vocals), Sean Witkin (drums and percussion) and pedal steel player Rand Anderson.
