It’s not often that I deeply connect with a song from a different language, yet when I first heard this track, the emotions transcended any language barrier. ‘Бути Нам’ is the debut release from Ukrainian independent electronic musician Shee Ma, and it takes listeners on an intense and captivating sonic journey. Translated into English as ‘To be Us,’ the experimental and immersive tune juxtaposes abrasive and almost industrial sounds with Shee Ma’s flowing and ethereal vocals to create a haunting and otherworldly experience that pulls you in and refuses to let go.
“In search of inspiration, I turned to the cultural figures of the past who reflected on the search for self and freedom and wrote about Crimea and Ukraine,” says Shee Ma. “Historical events are extremely recursive, but there is a unique chance to break this circle of repetition right now”.
Through themes of dying and rebirth, merging and dissolving in nature, Shee Ma has constructed a masterful piece of music that only gets more interesting and absorbing with each listen.
