Shaven Primates Shares Meaningful Album ‘Birds Aren’t Real’

What we appreciate about Shaven Primates is how carefully they curate their artistic output. There’s research and depth in both their lyricism and sonic stylings. It’s not a given: in today’s music landscape, where virality is often the most-wanted outcome, themes and sounds have become rather standardised.

The Oxford-based outfit does exactly the opposite, looking for a unique and authentic take on the world around them. ‘Birds Aren’t Real’ is the strongest evidence of that: the band’s latest release, the album explores the modern obsession with ‘alt-thought’ – as described by the band. Conspiracies, fascism, and so on. Such topical and controversial lyricism is layered on a bed of eclectic rock: from new-wave, retro references to more modern alt-rock and punk euphoria, everything plays a part in creating Shaven Primates’ kaleidoscopic artistry.

As if this weren’t enough for us to warrant a good listen to the record, ‘Birds Aren’t Real’ also navigates the troubling water of autism and learning disabilities in school, highlighting the crucial step of providing dedicated support. Such lyrical magnitude is mirrored in Shaven Primates’ lead vocals, so theatrical and evocative, really delving into the idea of a ‘majestic’ album.
