There’s something inherently otherworldly in ‘Futuristan’, something that’s quirky, unique and hypnotising, making it difficult to truly categorize the record. It all makes sense once we look into the way Shasau incorporated AI into it; as he explains: “The tracks on this album were recorded entirely with Artificial Intelligence, then combined into one recording with added samples and synthesizer parts”.
And so, it was born: the future of music… whatever your opinion on AI might be, we think that Vladim Militsin did a wonderful job of inserting human-made features in all of it. His attentive and forward-thinking vision guides the AI with purpose, making sure to craft a record that’s equally a product of randomness and intention.
A prominent question comes to mind: “Even if he no longer serves as the engine propelling the music forward, is Vadim still the driver, his hands firmly gripping the steering wheel?” Eventually, the listener will be the judge; in our case, it was a big resounding yes – as the many hands-on textures seem to reveal.
