The keen reader might recall reading about Shanaya Silva last year; writing about ‘Standing Ovation’, we proudly declared it “an irresistible nighttime banger”. Since then, the Australian songstress has been evolving her artistry in a more personal and nuanced direction, now unveiling a personal anthem which is reflective and rather dark. ‘Hit The Brakes’ explores the broken promises and many doubts around a struggling relationship.
Such a meaningful theme, packed with pathos and anxiety, is reflected in the overall production, here built over darker electronica grooves and an overall sense of mystery. Silva’s bright and evocative vocals still retain their power, fiercely conducting the listeners through Shanaya’s love complexities.
Hailing from Adelaide, Silva confirms once again the blessed creativity she’s been enjoying in the past year. We are big fans of her darker material too – it really suits the project.
