We are deeply impressed by the euphoric, positive and uplifting energy behind Shahera Sam’s latest single ‘Kenapa (Why)’. Hailing from Malaysia, the talented songstress continues her artistic mission into eclectic pop territories and indie extravaganza. Balanced between coolness and mainstream, Sam’s extensive catalogue has collected a sizeable number of streams, not a surprise given how good she is.
A constant in Shahera’s musical output is the overwhelming sense of positivity and hope – truly a breath of fresh air in our dark and intricate world. ‘Kenapa’ is certainly one of the highlights of 2024 for Sam: produced in collaboration with German creatives Sascha Scherer and Sam Baisch (from the band Rikas), the track is surprisingly tropical and groovy, taking the project in a poppier direction – at least temporarily.
It’s a formula that works well: the Kuala Lumpur-based artist’s light and dynamic vocal tone is very rewarding and satisfying, wrapping the listeners in happy vibes and a quirky romantic aura. Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Kenapa (Why)’, Sam explains: “‘Kenapa (Why)’ is the first song I ever wrote. I wrote it when I was 17 on a ukulele. Also, it’s my first Malay/English song, or ‘Manglish’ as Malaysians would call it. The song is about questioning and wondering why certain events happened in your life, and why certain people did what they did. However, I’ve learned that everything happens for a reason.”
