Back in 2021, deep-dark indie songstress SERENA closed the year by celebrating her debut EP, ‘Welcome to Wasteland’. A charming blend of intimate electronic productions, poignant melodies and spoken words, the record showcased the creative vision of a resilient and talented artist, improving her mastery release after release.
Now, she returns with what feels like a new beginning. ‘Heartworm’ shuffles the cards in favour of a broader sound, directly borrowing from SERENA’s pop-rock roots. That said, while drum machines have been substituted by organic drums, the keen listener will still encounter the London resident’s brooding, heartfelt lyricism, exploring themes of personal reckoning and deep-seated research.
Describing the inspiration behind ‘Heartworm’, SERENA describes: “Within the medical field, heartworm is an animal disease common in dogs, a parasite that takes home in their heart, killing them with a slow and painful death. I’ve always been fascinated by this word and translated the concept into a relationship that you can’t get out of your head, which you thought had faded long time ago but is still somehow alive and consuming you.”
Look out for a music video, available on November 25th!
