Introduced by furious riffing and twisting drum fills, ‘No Rest’ wastes no time in useless preambles. As its title declares, there’s no rest here; the record jumps instantly into all-out, cathartic indie rock, while navigating towards harder garage and alt influences. Yet, even amid such a vibrant musical prowess, the track displays its catchy and lyrical qualities with impressive ease. You see, vocals are friendly and relatable, making sure to attract a wide audience.
Hence, we can confidently consider ‘No Rest’ as a decently eclectic piece, at least in its commercial sense. A lot of the merit must be given to Gabriel A. Pentin, the founder and vocalist behind such a powerful project. It’s his clear-cut, charming tone that attracts the listeners with incredible vigour and force. Already seen in underground hardcore outfit UnHang, Pentin is a bit of a sonic genius, and ‘No Rest’ is another evidence of that.
Self Torque is Gabriel’s new moniker, with ‘No Rest’ as its primary attraction. Speaking about the inspiration behind the record, he explains: “No Rest started from the frustration of not being able to write a song, the opening line is “When will the inspiration come, when will things start to be fun?” It’s kind of about not knowing where to start with life. It’s based on not being able to do anything in yourself, but also recognising how far you’ve come”.
