Secret Smiles Returns with Fierce Single ‘Cocaine Promises’

[Photo Cred: Dylan Jet @makerofartstuff] – Boasting a stylish vintage character, ‘Cocaine Promises’ is a slice of fierce goodness, a playful and colourful nugget of rock’n’roll energy, delivered through the sapient and edgy hands of Los Angeles-based outfit Secret Smiles. We truly love their sonic identity; leaving behind the contemporary obsession with polishing a record to the extreme, they are perfectly at home using a slightly rougher and gritty recording character, championing retro-flavoured shimmering guitars and Beatles-esque drum grooves.

It’s a breath of fresh air; such unfiltered energy is irresistible, pulling the listener into a chaotic yet cheerful musical journey. We can only speculate on how good Secret Smiles are from a live standpoint, but from what we heard their shows must be a rather thrilling experience! What’s more, the single anticipates an upcoming self-titled EP, out now too.

‘Cocaine Promises’ particularly shines in its lyricism: tired of the City of Angels’ obsession with cocaine, they explain: “We were chatting about parties in LA and how annoyed we were meeting people who were super high on cocaine and promising to accomplish all of these things, and then never following through! I joked that I was going to write a song about it called ‘Cocaine Promises’ and what started as a comedic writing assignment became this song – it’s also just happened to be a fan favourite at shows.”
