If there’s one thing Australia is good at, is providing fresh new music. And if we say so! For a country where the majority of the territory is virtually inhospitable, it’s surprising how many good musicians they have to offer. Secret Lung is the latest in a series of innovative, fresh-sounding and intriguing bands to emerge from it, and we are glad to have discovered them. ‘Phantom Limbs’ – their debut effort – is a fierce yet passionate alt-rock anthem, infused with a touch of electrifying emo energy and just the lightest of pop-punk punch.
Honestly, we are impressed. Not just by their fantastic musicianship: Secret Lung’s lead vocals are also powerful and convincing, the perfect fit for the musical matter around them. Lead singer Jess Porter does a great job here, demanding and obtaining complete attention from the listeners. Charmingly, the rest of the band (Brycey and Evan Lee) do their part with backing vocals.
The three talented Australians have known each other for years and have gone through various musical projects together. But it was only recently that they decided to come together and form Secret Lung. Heavily inspired by the likes of Biffy Clyro and The Mars Volta, among others, the group has showcased itself at events like Bonez Alternative Queer Party, earning positive reviews and a sizeable early following.
Describing the lyrical inspiration behind ‘Phantom Limbs’, the band explains: “It’s a song about a jerk I was in love with years ago when I was a lot more tempted by emotionally unavailable men. He hurt me, I got a great song out of it – good trade, really. I think most people will find it pretty easy to relate to.”
