Scarlett Mill Share Gloomy Gem ‘Driftwood’

Introduced by a polite and minimal guitar action, ‘Driftwood’ evolves slowly, yet with a decisively melancholic and emotional character. Scarlett Mill’s vocals enter the sonic picture with their fuzzy quality, accompanied by an arpeggiator which grows in intensity over time. Soon, the track develops into an eclectic and gloomy indie/post-rock anthem, picking distortions amounts very carefully. The record’s chorus is the moment of true reckoning, with the group’s true livery being showcased to the listeners.

Quite wonderful; ‘Driftwood’ is an intriguing record, especially when it comes to Scarlett Mill’s vocal arrangements: a constant layering of high and low registries makes for tons of evocative and hazy energy, something one doesn’t forget about easily. The track finds its final target in instrumental glory, as you would expect from such a talented project. Overall, one can pick out tradition and futurism, a thin balance between the past and innovation.

Lyrically, ‘Driftwood’ is part of a wider album, ‘Chronicles’ – still unreleased. Speaking about the inspiration behind the storytelling, the Dutch group explains: “It’s a sailor misbehaving and the consequences that inevitably lead to a desperate fate.”
