Scarlet Mill Share Crepuscular Single ‘Just’

You all know how much we appreciate leftfield, quirky records. ‘Just’ perfectly fits the bill: built on obscure textures and a crepuscular production, the single captures the listener’s attention instantly, initiating a journey of introspections and immersive eclecticism. Blending new-wave stylings with polite electronic elements, the track provides the perfect sonic background for Scarlett Mill’s enchanting spoken words.

The Dutch duo, composed of Jennifer Moesker (vocals, piano, organ, synths) and Erik Verhoef (vocals, guitar, bass and drums), alternate each other on the mic, with Jennifer using her own hazy singing voice, and Erik delving into evocative spoken words. The guitar solo is pretty rocky and vibrant, showcasing how Scarlett Mill are not afraid of fuzzy distortions In fact, they help make the composition so quirky and melancholic.

Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Just’, the pair explain: “It is a story about a sailor who carries a horrible secret. Drifting through the German shallows, after an unfortunate fall into the sea, he miraculously revives in Paris but has now lost his memory. He encounters the androgynous manager of the famed Parisian Nightclub ‘El Molino escalata’ who appears to have profound knowledge of his history.”
