Introduced by the title track ‘Rocking Into Midnight’, Sanjay Michael’s latest album instantly shares a manifesto of what’s to come. An artistic guide, if you will, telling you that he’s not messing around. Classic, wholesome and unfiltered rock vibes are delivered with controlled saturation and hard-hitting drums, channelling the likes of AC/DC or KISS, among others. It’s a triumph, especially for any lover of nostalgic rock’n’roll.
The same theme can pretty much be found in the rest of the record, although you should expect a temporary focus on more contemporary and eclectic territories, such as the folk-inspired gem ‘Fly Away’. ‘Friday Night Drinks’ blinks an eye to hard rock and blues rock references.
Emerging from Singapore, talented guitarist, singer and songwriter Sanjay Michael seems perfectly at home in such classic settings. In fact, he’s built for it, even championing his trusty Gibson Les Paul in every press shot. Describing the album, he explains: “I sought to recreate the kind of ‘monster’ albums that I listened to when I was younger – a large collection of hit singles that were carefully curated and arranged so that the album was a journey in itself. I worked with both the keys and the sonic textures of each song so that as you listen through, each new song is a pleasant surprise.”
