Samuel Makanda is very adamant about wanting to make music with purpose; perhaps he’s looking for cathartic energy – tunes that serve a higher motif, tunes that hypnotize and help people escape the dark reality of our universe. Well, he’s rather successful at that; his material is incredibly vibrant and evocative. Mainly inspired by the soul, R&B and funk of the 80s, Makanda also incorporates a healthy amount of eclecticism, the likes of afrobeat and contemporary pop.
‘Darling…’ is the perfect evidence of that: built on bouncy, afro-like grooves, the song also oozes R&B lusciousness, embodying the passion and heartwarming energy we used to have back in the 90s and 80s. A charming saxophone helps convey that idea. Samuel’s vocals are treated in a modern synthetic goo, making for a stark contrast between the retro instrumental and the contemporary songwriting and delivery.
Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Darling…’, Makanda explains: “This song ‘Darling…’ is about being thankful for life. Being thankful for the things you cherish in life. This song makes you want to move and groove all your emotions into happiness and freedom.”
