A quirky indie gem, ‘Deny’ feels rather shy at first. Introduced by a muted rhythm guitar, the track gently yet constantly evolves into a beefier specimen. The sleazy coolness is always present, with rolling and polite drums, casual vocals and an array of minimal yet effective guitar tones. Sam and the Sea’s introspective storytelling crowns the record with charm and confidence, making for a tune that’s incredibly intimate, yet expansive and relatable.
That’s one of the magical powers of the Los Angeles-based creative: penning alternative anthems with a certain lo-fi aura around them. Yet, there’s an indefinite pop component somewhere in there, making records relatable and accessible. Marking the project’s return after more than a year of silence, ‘Deny’ also anticipates an upcoming album, which is expected this fall.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the single, Sam and the Sea explains: “I wanted to tell this story in a way that focuses on building up the strength and courage it takes to make a meaningful change. If you feel stuck, with no way out, this song is for you. You deserve to be happy.”
