‘Maze’ is a major throwback. If you are in your 30s (like us), you are probably bound to deeply relate to the track. Steeped in early ‘2000 pop flavourings (think of Kelly Clarkson, for example, but Pink fits the mould too), the single is a delightful slice of evocative fierceness and emotional intensity, guided by Sadie Nix’s powerful, charming vocals. We have featured the Brighton-based songstress on our blog before, but we are glad to see her delving into a more specific, nostalgic sonic direction.
It really adapts to her vocal tone, making the final track quite authentic. Framed into a music landscape that rewards familiarity and past influences, we are confident that ‘Maze’ will do very well. A quintessential, empowering break-up anthem, the song features sapient production by Leah Haywood. The record follows up from ‘How This Feels’ – together, the two releases paint a very interesting picture, with Nix embracing her US/international roots and playing to her strengths.
It’s glorious: ‘Maze’ is a stunning example of how the word ‘mainstream’ doesn’t have to mean ‘boring’. Sadie’s work is still fresh and interesting, and frankly, she can do no wrong with those vocals.
