Announcing himself with a charming Flamenco guitar, British singer and songwriter S J Denney returns to the music scenes with a brand new offering, the stunning single ‘Shadows in the Night’. The record is his second release of the year, continuing the cycle of intense productivity that seems to have blessed the Benfleet resident in the past couple of years. Of course, better for us.
What’s notable, is how Denney has slightly shuffled his card, sonically speaking. Usually at home in intimate folk territories, now S J looks projected towards artistic research and innovation, landing on an authentic Flamenco style that makes the listeners feel as if they were on a Spanish holiday. Rock tinges can still be found throughout the track, signalling the sapient eclecticism that greatly benefits the project. A charming trumpet joins in too.
Explaining the motivation behind the Flamenco shift, Denney explains: “I flirted with the idea of buying a flamenco guitar but decided to demo the part on my steel strung acoustic. Shortly after this, I recruited the super-talented Manuel Montero to play guitar. My aim was to create a flamenco song that crossed over into the Spaghetti Western genre. I’m really happy with the results.”
