Rye Catchers Announces Stunning Album ‘Covers and Concepts’

‘Covers and Concepts’ is a sort of homecoming record for Rye Catchers; it’s a destination, a way to close off an intensively creative period, packing a series of eclectic and charming collaborative tracks into one album, standing as a manifest for what the project has to offer. A frequent guest on our pages, the Milwaukee-based outfit is headed by songwriter and producer David McClintick Roberts, often collaborating with a plethora of vocal and musical talents.

It’s not easy to describe ‘Covers and Concepts’, mainly because it bathes in such a wide array of genres and cultural references. Eventually, one can find a constant, in the form of band-powered arrangements, often featuring organic drums and elegant guitars. From the heavy AOR of ‘Nothing You Say’, to the more poised indie-pop of ‘5G’, passing through the gritty rock’n’roll contained in ‘Round and Round’: everything screams eclecticism, especially when electronic soundscapes enter the sonic picture.

‘Covers and Concepts’ ends very fittingly with a jazz rendition of ‘Night and Day’, by Cole Porter. It feels like a soundtrack to end credits; Rye Catchers is thanking you for being part of his own musical experience. Time to move on. Although you can always come back, and replay from the beginning…
