There’s something extremely poetic and elegant in ‘Afterlife’. Drenched in cinematic and dramatic energy, the record is a slice of pure unfiltered mystery, delivered through the evocative and charming vocals of British songstress Ruby Tingle. Sonically, the track is pretty unique: balanced over soft, mellow textures and wide, ample reverbs, it creates a stark contrast with the slightly dissonant and dark harmonic material, making for a rather quirky and crepuscular listening experience.
Crowning it all, we find Tingle’s enigmatic vocal tone, often accompanied by a thousand harmonies, thus creating a surprisingly dreamy yet secretive sonic landscape. A true gem, ‘Afterlife’ is a refreshing song, especially taking into account the current state of the music industry – where following trends and proven formulas seems to be the standard. Instead, Tingle is focused on her own path, which will connect her to a wider audience.
A multi-talented creative busy both in visual and sonic arts, Ruby Tingle delves into a bold, fictional world of historical swamp-informed euphoria, connecting her music with a physical exhibition taking place at The Whitaker Museum, near Manchester. As she explains: “The show draws together installation, works on paper, music, scent and performance to create multi-sensory fantasy wetlands, based on my fascination with the habitat and new stories dreamt up from her personal experiences in nature.”
