‘Magpie’ is a rather impressive record. Presented to us under the guise of a music-shaped chiaroscuro, the track finds its creative nucleus in the striking contrast between its slick, rolling instrumental and its meaningful, personal lyricism. Built on lush guitar tones and evocative textures, ‘Magpie’ takes refuge in dream pop as much as it does in post-punk – at least on a general level.
Eventually, the best way to conceptualise the record is perhaps just to think of it as Rú’s honest, unfiltered special expression, a slice of authentic art rooted in personal experience and painful feelings. Remembering the loss of Rú’s mother a few years ago, ‘Magpie’ reflects on a moment of darkness and a well-timed saviour-like figure, all treated in a nostalgic, positive way. As if to say, melancholia does not need to inherently be sad.
An eclectic creative and proficient musician, Rú seems to have now found an artistic formula that’s the perfect balance between storytelling and instrumental quirkiness. We certainly dig it! Speaking about the single’s recording process, the Irish talent explains: “‘Magpie’ was recorded over an August weekend in Neon Noise Studio Omagh Northern Ireland. It was produced by my old friend Pete Doherty who I worked with on my Ruairí & The Owls project a few years back.”
