Now unveiling their second single, American storytellers Rough Lovers seem to expand the compelling artistic picture already showcased in their ‘Eastside Girlzzz’ debut. There’s a lot to discuss; from their theatrical, dramatic lyrical aura to their nuanced, urgent arrangement, the band seems to enjoy bathing in Folk and Classic Rock waters, blending the vocal gravitas and presence of the great American songwriters with vibrant and fuzzy guitar tones.
It’s a marriage between light and darkness, if you will, resulting in a listening experience that’s cathartic, almost solemn, yet playful and elegant. ‘Rough Lovers’ – the latest self-titled track – could be seen as a statement of intent, a manifesto for the charged and experienced musical wisdom behind the kaleidoscopic outfit.
Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Rough Lovers’, singer Justin Alan Payne explains: “This whole new endeavour, in part, goes back to the creation of this song in the studio in the Spring of 2023. It’s a part of a deeply introspective phase in my writing, as I am well over the age of 40 at this point, and time has its way with your perspective.”
