Rose Rutledge Returns with Signature Flutescapes ‘Inhale’

We are certainly not newbies to Rose Rutledge’s leftfield artistry. Writing about the American sonic wizard earlier this year, we proudly declared: “Delving into ‘Own World’ is like jumping into the unknown. The listening experience is so fresh and authentic – almost hypnotising.” Well, we stand by our words, as much as Rutledge stands by her authentic and unique style. ‘Inhale’ is the project’s latest effort, and that’s quite a glorious and majestic return.

Featuring a more conventional structure, at least in terms of grooves and beats, ‘Inhale’ is first introduced by evocative and eclectic soundscapes, containing fragments of vocal harmonies and magnetising human breaths. Slowly, the track evolves into a trip-hop-flavoured gem, while flourishing as a genre-less jewel. Crowning it all, we find Rutledge’s signature ‘flutescapes’, an element that strongly reminds us of Rose’s classical training, here being pivoted into creating something that feels incredibly forward-thinking and contemporary.

Delving into the concept behind the record, Rutledge explains: “The journey of ‘Inhale’ commences with a profound inhalation, a simple act of drawing breath that forms the rhythmic foundation of the entire composition, sustaining its cadence until the very closing notes.”
