For the uneducated reader, the name Rodney Cromwell might sound pretty new. In reality, he’s a modern synthpop pioneer. The good kind of synthpop: we are not referring to late 80s Italo disco extravaganza, but rather to the more nuanced synth-fuelled explorations so common in the early 80s – often blinking an eye to electronica stylings.
A staple of the London music scene, Cromwell is now unveiling his latest effort, a series of remixes of last year’s single ‘The Winter Palace’. Collected in a four-track EP, the new versions expand the sonic narrative, taking Rodney’s composition into darker, techno-infused territories. It all works well, showcasing how Cromwell’s songwriting still perfectly works, even with different sound references. A sign of his sapient artistry.
Notably, the remixes are produced by British sonic wizards Gemma Cullingford and Infra Violet.
