Hailing from Chicago, contemporary rock outfit Anfang is bound to be your next musical obsession. There’s something unique in their artistry. Perhaps is the permanent epic aura exuding from their fierce and upfront artistic style – or perhaps, it’s the eclectic blend of alt-rock and grunge, allowing the American group to shift between references almost effortlessly, while providing a consistent listening experience.
After having taken some creative time in 2022, Anfang is back with their latest record, the gritty and punchy number ‘Honey Trudge’. In it, we discover a certain retro-flavour, as if the track was a celebration of the classics. Of course, tones and distortion are very modern, but the structure, grooves and character remind us of musical matter more akin to a 70’ hard rock band. Whichever way you look at it, ‘Honey Trudge’ is rock at its best. Not to mention the group’s lead vocals: courtesy of Andie Zaragoza, her drive and charisma make instantly everything better.
With influences from legendary acts, including Queens of the Stone Age, Arctic Monkeys, and Led Zeppelin, Anfang creates a sound that is hard-hitting yet atmospheric – “like the human heart in conflict with itself”. Anfang’s music speaks to the notion of starting over, a theme that resonates with listeners who themselves may feel like they are in need of a fresh start.
