Isn’t it funny how side projects eventually become one’s most successful endeavour? For instance, take Hampshire-based rock band God from the Machine. Starting out as a small, passion-fuelled artistic outlet, members Joe Shanks and Sam Dyche quickly realized they were onto something special. Debuting late last year with single ‘Paralyzed’, they instantly showcased a knack for poignant, expressive rock music, gracefully infused with pop elements.
Today, they keep going on what’s now become their main focus. God from the Machine is a flourishing reality, one we can’t wait to see blossom into a bigger act. For now, though, they offer us a new record. ‘The River’ is the duo’s newest banger. From it, you can expect a slightly mellower aesthetic, enhanced by slow-tempo, soft-rock arrangements and enchanting vocal harmonies. A truly stunning musical piece.
What hits the most, though, is the breathtaking, glorious chorus. ‘The River’ builds towards a resolution, which we find in an emotional, nostalgic chorus, potentially ready to be sung aloud in massive arena gigs. Who’s to say they won’t be playing there soon? Their songwriting is certainly ready.
Describing the circumstances behind the tracks’ conception, the band explains: “The River came together following a bout of writer’s block surrounded by the frustration of writing for a new project, whilst coming to terms with the loss of another. This in turn inspired the lyrics to focus on themes of anxiety, self-worth, and the daunting notion of wondering what the future will hold”.
