Clocking in at a relatively short length – one minute and thirty seconds – ‘Boy Obsessed’ hits the listeners with a quick burst of euphoria and fierce energy, almost resembling a hurricane: it happened, but you couldn’t quite understand it. Built on raucous and rebellious punk-rock stylings, the record is RobinAugust’s latest effort. Based in Nashville, the talented newcomer showcases her charming and authoritative vocal tone, a glamorous feature that still manages to retain nuance and depth.
Long-time friend and collaborator Mercy Sophia also features on the track, perfectly complimenting RobinAugust. The pair were destined to release this record: exactly 10 years ago (at the age of 10), the two recorded the first version of ‘Boy Obsessed’, a song that was itself written a couple of years prior. Today, we get to hear the record in much more adult settings, although it retains a certain fizziness and playful punch.
Speaking about ‘Boy Obsessed’, RobinAugust explains: “I wrote the chorus backstage of a play I was in because I was jealous that my friend was getting all the guys. I was listening to a lot of chick rock, riot grrrl, at the time, and I was like, ‘This would be a perfect way to write like those people.’ I brought it to Mercy and was like, ‘I just made this awesome chorus. Would you help me write the rest?’”
