Self-described as ‘Americana with Synths’, ‘Be Easy’ shines a light on Rob Dobson’s eclectic artistry. Drenched in drum fierceness, steel-pedal guitars and sharp fuzziness, the album signals a return to his roots for the Los Angeles-based creative. Over nine compelling tracks, Dobson’s album will particularly resonate with any country lover out there. Despite that, it’s not a traditional record by any means, instead oscillating between modern and retro flair with charisma and elegance.
Rob’s vocals do the heavy lifting most of the time, boasting a dynamic and melodious tone that’s the perfect match for such an authentic album. Drums are often treated in a light modulation effect – take for instance ‘Dream Team’ – adding a touch of psychedelia to an already rich musical formula. ‘Love Isn’t Blind’ is a great power-pop example, also featuring a healthy amount of synths. Yohei appears as a guest vocalist on ‘Flange’, giving it a more expansive, ethereal character.
Overall, ‘Be Easy’ is a nuanced and complex album, one that deserves time to be digested and understood in full. It’s also a highly collaborative effort, with Dobson operating out of his home studio (‘Hear Garden’) alongside fellow musicians Kosta Galnopolous and Davin Givhan, among others. Speaking about the inspiration behind the record, Rob explains: “It explores the intersections of reinvention, collaboration, and the beauty of spontaneity”.
