‘The Rope’ starts with a punchy drum groove, instantly revealing a series of things about the record. Firstly, there’s no elegance here: rather, there’s fierceness, fuzziness and controlled chaos. Once the guitar joins the party, there’s no more doubt whatsoever, and we are ready for what’s to come. Gloomy, intense and obscure new-wave with post-rock flavourings.
Penned by English rocker Richie Harrison, ‘The Rope’ hits the listeners straight in the face, like a bag of bricks. It doesn’t lie, instead offers the pure, unfettered truth, unveiling the walls of social convention that surrounds a general election – and politics in general. Having a hard time deciding who to give his vote to, Harrison instead steeps his political voice in his music, something that’s obviously paying off.
‘The Rope’ offers a compelling sonic formula, well complementing its sharp and metaphorical lyricism. As Richie explains: “I was reading all the manifestos and I couldn’t decide who to pick… On social you have everyone telling you who to pick, but they all lie. ‘The Rope’ is about not being able to choose a side.”
