‘Retrovert’ is a surprisingly convincing offering. Emerging from Richard Berger’s evergreen musical flair, the album delves into psych and dream pop territories, blending organic drums with blissful synthetisers and modulating guitar riffs. Berger’s vocals float freely on top of it all, reminding us of the likes of Tame Impala and Mac De Marco, but also more soulful R&B figures like Arlo Parks (especially in ‘Ignore Me’).
Creatively, ‘Retrovert’ is full of surprises – like the instrumental interlude of the same name, mid-record. It is there that we can appreciate a sonic manifesto of what the project stands for. Elegant, detunes synth pads, groovy drums and playful percussions; what more could you want?
Based in L.A., Berger is still going strong at a mature age. Having reached his 50s, he’s still keen on contemporary music, not falling into the ‘nostalgia’ trap many are drawn to. Speaking about the record, he explains: “‘Retrovert’ is for dreamers – and for those of us who have an appreciation for good things past – Don’t waste time!!”
