Emerging from Adelaide, Australia, Luke Million has been wandering airwaves for almost a decade, building a highly personal artistic identity focused on retro sonic matter. Think Italo Disco, Cosmic Disco, 80s pop: everything concurs in shaping Million’s alluring aesthetic. The keen listener might know him for past dancy bangers such as ‘Arnold’, although we’d all be mistaken in thinking this is purely a club project.
We’d be mistaken indeed, because Luke Million’s latest effort takes the shape of a glorious, convoluted concept album, a holistic experience like we hadn’t seen in years. Titled ‘Gina The Synth Cat’, the record builds its backbone on the curious story of Gina The Cat, having to travel the universe in search of redemption for her own planet. Needless to say, she’s the synth cat, and as such, her legendary journey is marked by an absolutely stunning musical contour. But before we get into that, we’ll mention that the album’s storyline can also be found in a custom comic book, created by an all-South-Australian team of illustrators.
So, ‘Gyna The Synth Cat’. In it, Luke Million builds a masterclass in vintage synthesisers and drum machines. Utilising some of the most iconic machines around, such as Roland and Oberheim, the talented Aussie builds an ever-changing sonicscape, taking the listener through various moods and tempos. From the orchestral Jarre-flavoured ‘Ballade pour Gina’, to the synthwave gem ‘Arrival’, passing by the Italo Disco revival of ‘On The Run’.
An absolutely stellar album, which you should experience intimately, without distractions.
