The keen reader will certainly recall a feature we did for Ren Genevieve back in January. Diving into her single ‘gods to ground’, we proudly declared it “a stunning slice of nostalgia and blissful energy that’s incredibly striking and cathartic.” We also announced an EP on the horizon… a record that’s now among us. ‘tongue tied’ represents a deserved milestone for the New York City-based songstress. Writing about change and self-empowerment, the record is highly relatable and meaningful.
From an aural standpoint, ‘tongue tied’ is rather familiar, wrapping listeners into elegant, expansive goodness, a tapestry of gentle soundscapes and spacious vocals. From vibrant electronic beats (opener ‘michigan’) to acoustic gems (follow-up ‘forts), there’s a great deal of eclecticism in it, revealing Genevieve as a talented creative comfortable in a multitude of musical settings. It all makes sense, as the foundational element behind her work is the passionate call for growth and evolution that arises from her lyricism.
Exploring the coming-of-age themes behind the EP, Ren explains: “A collection of snapshots of emotion, a time in my life that featured great change: starting university, becoming an adult, and finding my own strength and power.” We are confident listeners will mirror themselves in Genevieve’s luscious songwriting.
