Delving into ‘Succession’ EP is like finding a double-faced artistic coin in a dreamy field, then taking it home and nailing it on the wall. Built over two sole episodes, the record is introduced by its title track, ‘Succession’, an introspective, crepuscular and malleable gem that seems to bounce from intimate and nuanced electronica to more groovy and soulful anthemic sections. Remi Charles is the king of such ambiguity: one moment he’s diving into James Blake-Esque vocal harmonies, the other he’s grooving into Jackson-flavoured dance euphoria.
The result is a record that feels majestic and highly immersive, and frankly, it’s quite well produced too. With slick electronica and modern soul-pop rhythms, everything screams ‘masterpiece’. ‘Sugar’ – the EP’s second and last track – takes it down a notch, at least when it comes to modern references. Elegant, poised and always vibey, the song is directly informed by classic R&B, with a generous slice of organic instruments thrown into it.
Obviously, it would all fall flat without Charles’ vocal prowess. His luscious and highly technical vocal tone works wonders in elevating the EP to the next level.
