At the beginning of this year, Wellington-based independent rapper and rising superstar Rella released a tune called ‘ROCKSTAR‘. Thankfully, my fellow music lover Gabriel latched onto the track and shared it with me, and we’ve both been waiting patiently to see what Rella got up to next. Well…I am proud to introduce to you ‘ETERNAL’, the musician’s debut album that I’m pretty certain is poised to take him to the next level. Featuring thirteen songs that include the aforementioned ‘ROCKSTAR’, it’s a moody and melancholic record that expertly fuses elements of bedroom pop, hip-hop, and rap.
‘BELONG’ gets the album underway and you’re instantly immersed in Rella’s mellow, emotional, and nuanced soundscape. He keeps his tunes short, and ‘BELONG’ is no different. At just under two and a half minutes, it’s a concise and captivating introduction! ‘BROKEN’ then follows and takes a more “in-your-face” approach. Hard-hitting bass and a flurry of high hats are the order of the day here.
With ten more tracks to discover and explore, I’m jealous that you all get to hear them for the very first time! ‘ETERNAL’ is an unbelievable debut album from a highly gifted artist, and it’s a record that I’ll be playing for many years to come!
