Originally a crepuscular, poignant offering, ‘WEEDS (Elated Remix)’ has now been given a rather uplifting and bubbly livery, framed into a contemporary EDM aura that’s as energetic as it is hypnotising. Produced by Elated, the track sees Californian songstress Reina Mora finding a new lease of life for her song. We must say, her luscious, evocative vocals work very well in such a context. The listening experience is still pretty haunting and intense, yet the dancy breakdowns are anthemic and explosive.
Connecting with director Eric J Vasquez, Reina Mora has also crafted a wonderfully nuanced music video. Partly inspired by Fiona Apple’s ambiguous aesthetic, the visuals for ‘WEEDS (Elated Remix)’ move with sultry elegance, channelling shadows and dark textures into shots of Mora’s beautiful and mysterious figure. The result creates a curious contrast with the popular, mainstream flavourings of the remix.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the video, the Los Angeles-based creative explains: “I had a vision to pay homage to one of Reina’s favourite artists, Fiona Apple. I sent Eric a reference photo of the ‘Criminal’ music video, which got the ball rolling creatively.” Don’t you love it when good ideas just work out? Especially if the humans behind them are incredibly talented.
