Refreshing Rap Vibes From Californian Duo RPxSB

We appreciate when artists follow their own ways, making authentic, honest music without having to compromise. One of those heroes (they are two, in fact), is Californian hip-hop outfit RPxSB. Standing for ‘Rock Plaid and Survive Bullshxt’, the pair has been releasing music since 2019, but in truth, their creative collaboration goes way back to their high school days. It is this deep tie that allows them to write such meaningful, witty material, staying true to their values. RPxSB had the most productive year to date, with four albums under their belt.

Now, there is a story about the last three. They all are part of the same album trilogy, themed around the same style and design. Called ‘CREATURES…’, the records explore Roddy Picante and Stay-Bizzy’s personal experiences, together with an uncensored perspective on contemporary themes. A sort of ‘holistic’ view on human existence, making these releases the duo’s personal manifesto.

‘CREATURES…Act III: Jopo’ is the latest instalment of the trilogy, released last week. In it, the listener will find eight tracks, all sharing a hip-hop aesthetic balanced between retro and modern, exhibiting a fresh, cool edge. Let’s start with the production: the beats are really heterogenous, the sampling bright and ingenious. For instance, ‘Bad Lemons’ features a Latin/soul sample that instantly characterizes the track as bubbly, upbeat and cheeky. Of course, RPxSB also know how to reference the classics: ‘Bip City Blues’ features boom bap sensibilities, recalling the glorious sound of the 90s.

Overall, a worthy release from a talented duo. While causing a buzz in their San Francisco motherland, we are confident they will do so nationally as well, very soon.
