‘Airdrop’ is the wonderfully lo-fi, eclectic, and genre-bending new album from Düsseldorf-based indie-rock act Random Dudes. Founded by art school graduate Roland Sonnabend in 2018, ‘Airdrop’ is the band’s third full-length album to date and, if I’m being honest, a tough one to place in some sort of genre box. I guess…think along the lines of indie-pop meets synth-pop meets art-rock. All eleven tracks were actually recorded by Sonnabend alone as a result of a rainy summer in 2021 and a slight addiction to cheap 80s and 90s keyboards.
Lyrically, ‘Airdrop’ jumps back and forth, from the climate crisis to ageing and everything in between. “There are some songs that are intentionally written to be cheesy and yet obscure love songs,” the band admit. Again though, similar to their soundscape, Random Dudes’ lyrical experimentation and inventiveness is something that you just have to experience for yourself. Oh, you lucky thing!
Word on the street is that Random Dudes have already recorded a follow-up to ‘Airdrop’. What an industrious bunch! This album proves that the band are willing to push musical boundaries, and it’s exciting to think about what the next one might have in store!
