If there’s one thing we can learn from Rae Lou’s latest offering, is that a stunning piece of pop music often stands up on its own with just a few, carefully curated elements. The British talent knows it well, championing a rather simple artistic formula, built on a poignant piano and her evocative, wonderful vocals. Of course, this ‘simplicity’ is mainly a façade. You see, there’s so much more to ‘Suffocate’ that meets the eye – or better, the ear. While sonically the track might feel quite straightforward, it is in its lyricism that the artistic picture reveals itself.
Inspired by the upcoming UK feature film ‘Watching Goldfish Suffocate’, Rae Lou seeks to explore the dark overtones of mental health struggles, highlighting how it can be challenging to deal with our personal issues by ourselves. As she explains: “The lyrics delve into the relationship with self and I clearly imagined a character having a conversation in the mirror when I wrote the chorus. It’s very much a call to action, imploring ‘don’t just watch me suffocate…’, pleading yourself to help yourself when you’re stuck in a dark place.”
Championing a long career as an international performer and wanderlust-driven creative, Lou showcases her refined and charming songwriting, coupled with vocals to die for – so malleable, yet so intense and controlled.
