R.M. Hendrix Takes a Stark, Reflective Look at Society in ‘YUKS’

We are familiar with R.M. Hendrix’s eclectic and leftfield artistry. In fact, we do cherish a lot of his records; exploring alternative, industrial landscapes with gloomy post-punk energy, the Iceland-based creative champions a unique sonic formula, one that’s never obvious or repetitive. ‘YUKS’ expands on the same theme, both from a lyrical and sonic standpoint. Committed to describing the current state of society in artistic terms, Hendrix focuses on the meaning behind the word ‘yuck’, more commonly referred to as a mixture of laughter and disgust.

A cathartic and healthy methodology to find his way back towards authenticity in such dark times, the album develops a liminal, kaleidoscopic and experimental aural universe, one where daring electronic textures and mangled trip-hop beats coexist alongside blissful ambient soundscapes and floaty, ethereal vocals. In fact, Hendrix’s delivery here is almost prophetic, as he delves into political satire and societal concerns.

A monumental, long album, ‘YUKS’ is a complex effort, a compositional endeavour with many angles and moods. It simply mirrors reality. We recommend taking time to absorb every ounce of the sonic gold in it, as it is likely to resonate in a different, particular way with each human being. Speaking about the concept behind the album, R.M. explains: “After laughter, we still have compassion. We still have to speak the truth. But I think laughter is a form of self-preservation and resistance. It’s an attack on the thin-skinned and a way to heal.”
