The keen reader might remember R.M. Hendrix, having appeared on our blog earlier this year. We proudly declared about his previous record: “With mesmerising soundscapes and organic textures, ‘Blindur’ can induce a state of mild trance, providing the perfect escape from a reality that feels complex and overly chaotic.” Standing by our words, we are motivated to follow the American creative in more eclectic territories – he doesn’t disappoint.
‘Automaton (Turn Yourself On)’ is the project’s latest effort, an industrial, synth-powered jewel that’s also incredibly fuzzy and dark. A shock of adrenaline, the single is introduced by a wavy, modulated and distorted bass synthesiser, pairing well with minimal drum machines and new-wave-flavoured vocals, telling tales of a dystopian future with committed creepiness. Intense soundscapes layer against organic drum grooves further ahead, putting the record in decisively post-rock territories.
Speaking about ‘Automaton (Turn Yourself On)’, R.M. Hendrix explains the fictional story celebrated in the lyrics: “After the Second World War monsters filled the airwaves and cinemas. We’re in a new monster era, except no singular horrendous event has initiated it. The monsters are arriving in boring press releases and software updates. They sit with us on sofas, ride in our pockets and choose our music.” That’s your Halloween tune right there.
