Quenta’s ‘Roughly Speaking’ is a Moving and Melancholic Triumph

London-based newcomers Quenta are undoubtedly one of the most intriguing new duos on the scene. Their debut album ‘Eye’s Don’t Lie’ was released in April, and we at Mesmerized immediately fell in love with the pair’s vibe. ‘Family 4 Sale’ was a tune that we labelled as a “kaleidoscopic, haunting, and dark gem”, and today we’ll be honing in on ‘Roughly Speaking’, the record’s lead single.

Complete with offbeat drums, a reverse snare, moving bass parts, and a deeply melancholic piano melody, ‘Roughly Speaking’ nods to the experimental spirit of King Krule, the soulful flair of Prince, and the gritty storytelling of Tom Waits. Immersive, soul-stirring, and simply genius.

Capturing the journey of two souls whose once strong bond has dissolved, now lost and drifting apart, the track grapples with the brutal reality of a comforting connection slipping away and becoming irretrievable. “Their door was closed and not even the truest of love could turn the handle,” states the duo.

Produced by Nathan Ridley (Plantoid), ‘Eyes Don’t Lie’ is quickly becoming one of my favourite albums of the year. Quenta are creating their own artistic universe, and we feel honoured to share the ride with them!
