‘The Day Lennon Died’ is a special record. It’s obvious since the start, with a psychedelic, kaleidoscopic intro that creates a solemn, cathartic atmosphere, a safe musical place where listeners can practise introspection and mindfulness. In a chaotic world, Prison Escapee trust his music to offer a refuge, albeit a colourful one. Anyway, we are digressing; that’s just how the track makes us feel. Bending retro and new wave stylings with abstract post-punk, the Long Beach creative is able to deliver an absolute gem.
Timeless and immersively aspirational, ‘The Day Lennon Died’ makes ample use of spacious guitar tones and fuzzy reverbs, building this massive wall of sound that acts as a stark contrast with the sparse drum beat and far away bassline. Ethereal and evocative, the record makes the best out of an instrumental piece, indulging in its hypnotising attitude.
Not a newbie to the industry, Prison Escapee has long championed fresh music, running his own independent record label, Housewarming Records (not active at the moment). The project has a strong DIY ethos, especially when it comes to creative choices and performances.
