We honestly just discovered Principe Valiente, and felt guilty about it. Why? mainly because we are late to the party. After a quick check on their Spotify profile, it’s obvious how the Swedish duo has been building a sizeable following over the past decade, boasting millions of streams on Spotify alone.
Answering the question ‘What’s all the hype about?” is very easy; in fact, a quick listen to the band’s latest album will suffice. ‘In This Light’ takes Principe Valiente at the forefront of the dream pop and new wave scene once again. Drawing heavily from influences such as Depeche Mode and The Cure, the Stockholm-based pair indulge in dark, theatrical vocals, emotional arrangements and shiny guitar riffs, all drenched in long textures and obscure sonic panoramas.
We are big fans of what we hear. For the most leftfield listeners, opener effort ‘Your Only Enemy’ will be a loved episode, with its long, cinematic and hypnotising intro and the long instrumental outro at the end. For others, fast-paced and post-rock-infused anthems such as ‘Facing The Truth’ will be a better match (you know what? There’s a little bit of Interpol in it, too).
